Amazing Chia Seeds – Do More Than Grow Green Hair

CH CH CH CHIA!  Remember those commercials for Chia Pets?  Not only do they offer pets, but they have a variety of Chia Heads – even famous figures like SpongeBob and Obama.  Pets or heads – figurines made of porous clay that you water and then they grow chia sprouts which looks like hair (sort of).

Well, that was the only time I even heard the word Chia.  I never even knew what a chia was, until recently.  And, I never thought it was something I would be eating (chia, that is, not the chia pet).  My friend Tammy told me about Chia Seeds and that they are very good for you.  So, I did a little research.  Since then, I have learned that Chia Seeds are a super nutritious food.  They are an excellent source of fiber, antioxidants, and plant derived omega 3 fatty acid.  This can help reduce heart disease and lower blood pressure.  They are also a good source of calcium and plant based protein.

When chia seeds soak in water, they form a gel like substance.  Research says this gel like texture also forms in your stomach when you eat chia.  This is said to slow the conversion of carbohydrates to sugar, which can aid in controlling diabetes.  And, because chia seeds can absorb large amounts of water quickly, they are a great enhancer in hydrating our bodies.  Many say that adding chia to their diet have resulted in incredible changes in stamina and overall energy levels.  They also can make you feel full faster and for longer periods of time, which can help in weight loss.

Well, with all this information about how great chia is, including recommendations from Dr. Oz, I decided to buy it and try it.  I found a bag at COSTCO and purchased it.  It came in a re-sealable package.  And, it doesn’t require any grinding or refrigeration.  The package states you can add it to smoothies, yogurt, and salad dressings.  You can also sprinkle it on oatmeal or cereal or blend into your favorite muffin recipe.  So far, I’ve only mixed it in with my yogurt, and like it that way.  I plan to try a few other recipes I found using chia.  If I like the way they turn out, I will share them with you.  But for now, I do recommend adding some chia to your diet.  It has some really great health benefits.
