OMEGA 3 Fish Oil…Not Just Good For Your Heart!

This is the 2nd article in my series about supplements. Another supplement I add to my diet is Omega 3 Fish Oil. There have been many studies done on the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids, including heart health, cancer prevention, and brain health. Regarding heart health, Omega 3 fats have been shown to help protect against heart disease by making platelets in the blood less sticky, thereby preventing clumping and blockages of blood flow. In addition, some studies have shown that Omega 3’s can reduce triglycerides (blood fats related to cholesterol) which, if high, can lead to heart disease. Some recent studies have shown that DHA and EPA found in fatty fish and fish oil supplements may protect against certain type cancers. As far as brain health, deficiencies in Omega 3 fats have been linked to: depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD, and ADD.

The product I use, OILSMART OMEGA 3-6-9, is manufactured by Renew Life, and they have been in business since 1997. The supplement ingredients in their product include: Certified organic cold-pressed flaxseed oil, cold-water fish oil, cold-pressed borage oil and lipase (an enzyme to help with absorption and to reduce any fishy after taste.) There are many Omega Fish Oil brands to choose from, but at a minimum, you should be sure the brand you choose has a guarantee of purity and testing for heavy metals and pesticides. Additionally, the supplement facts on the label should include amounts for EPA’s, DHA’s, and total Omega amounts per serving. Some inexpensive brands may be lacking in this area.

If you are looking for a healthy way to get a little more Omega Fatty Acids in your diet, then this supplement may be for you. But as always, do your own research and then consult with your doctor.
